Investigating psychological mechanisms underpinning refugee mental health

What is this research about?

Dr Angela Nickerson is leading a team that is currently undertaking a number of studies, trying to understand how psychological processes influence refugee mental health. These processes include:

  • How refugees manage strong emotions
  • Feelings of control over the world
  • Ways of thinking about things that have happened in the past
  • Feelings of injustice

These studies apply longitudinal, observational and experimental methods to form a comprehensive picture of how psychological processes may be impacted by the refugee experience and influence subsequent mental health and functioning.
