The Relationship Between Lexical and Episodic Memory: Professor Marcus Taft

What is this research about?

This project looks at the relationship between the way we mentally represent the words we know (i.e., lexical memory) and the way we remember a specific occasion when a word was encountered (i.e. episodic memory).

Participants study a list of words and/or nonwords and are later asked to recognise whether or not each of a set of words and/or nonwords was on that list. Of particular interest are novel items ("foils") that are erroneously recognised as having been on the studied list.

The relationship between the items on the list and the foils is manipulated in order to see what sort of similarity leads to confusion. This helps establish the type of information involved in episodic memory.
