What happens on Placement?

Students undertake many different types of activities on a placement. The following is a brief list from previous placements. Each activity may not apply at every placement site

  • Carrying out psychological assessments of skills, abilities, needs, interests, values and personality
  • Conducting interviews in a caring and appropriate manner
  • Assessment of material gathered from interviews or other research projects
  • Writing reports or other forms of technical writing in an appropriate register
  • Prioritizing issues needing to be resolved
  • Applying psychology skills to case studies of individuals or groups
  • Remaining informed about latest developments in this area and being able to communicate latest research to colleagues in the workplace
  • Applying critical and creative thinking to unfamiliar situations
  • Working on existing or longer terms projects as part of a team, or on own
  • Using appropriate research skills
  • Observing interviews and mediation sessions, preparing advice and conducting consultation sessions
  • Attending meetings
  • Filing, requesting and analysing appropriate files
  • Reviewing case management files and procedures
  • Facilitating group activities
  • Learning how to research in shorter time frames
