Professional Asosciations Why join an association? Education does not end after graduation. Becoming a member of professional associations is an important way to maintain your professional skills and knowledge, and remain up to date with current developments within your field of practice. Joining an association is also important for your career development. It allows for networking with professional colleagues, in order to share ideas and information, and to gain useful contacts for current professional use and potential employment. Professional associations may also provide a formal or informal code of practice. This plays a role in educating members in areas such as ethical principles and practice, awareness of professional obligations toward clients and colleagues, and maintenance of professional knowledg What sorts of events are held? Professional associations will often hold regular meetings, in order to inform members of new developments within their field of work. Often guest speakers will attend meetings, and provide a talk in their area of expertise. Other events may include major conferences or panel discussions with international guest speakers. Other intermediary forms of contact may include the publishing of newsletters or journals. Social activities are also generally held, which encourage networking in an informal, social environment.
